I hope everyone had a restful Spring Break. It's nice to see the fresh little faces back and 3 months left to go. Mme Kelsey's time is coming to an end as her last day with us will be Thursday, April 14th. We have very much enjoyed having her here and we will look forward to seeing her as a sub in our school afterwards.
Science: We are finishing up our unit on hearing and sound that is being delivered by Mme Kelsey. Students have explored the nature of sound, its sources, its qualities and what it is. They learned that sound is vibration and that changes in vibration can affect the loudness, pitch and quality of sound. They learned about sound travel by studying what things carry sound, what things make it louder or softer, and what happens to sound when it reaches their ears. The sensitivity of human ears and those of other animals is examined, as students learned about the safe use of this valuable sense.
Social Studies: We will be moving into our next unit where the students will investigate how the environment impacts the quality of life in our 4 diverse countries.
French: We will be beginning a little novel study with the book "La Nouvelle Maitresse" We will read chapters together and then complete activities based on the readings. There is a movie to accompany the novel which we will conclude the unit with.
English: We will begin a research project on animals. The students will chose an animal and research what they eat, habitat, size and other relevant information. The students will do research on the computer through a variety of sites. We will try to make a special trip to the GP Public Library to find more information in books.
Math: We will soon be moving into our measurement unit where students will learn: 1. Relate the passage of time to common activities, using nonstandard and standard units (minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years). 2. Relate the number of seconds to a minute, the number of minutes to an hour and the number of days to a month in a problem-solving context. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of measuring length (cm, m) by: • selecting and justifying referents for the units cm and m • modelling and describing the relationship between the units cm and m • estimating length, using referents • measuring and recording length, width and height. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of measuring mass (g, kg) by: • selecting and justifying referents for the units g and kg • modelling and describing the relationship between the units g and kg • estimating mass, using referents • measuring and recording mass. 5. Demonstrate an understanding of perimeter of regular and irregular shapes by: • estimating perimeter, using referents for cm or m • measuring and recording perimeter (cm, m) • constructing different shapes for a given perimeter (cm, m) to demonstrate that many shapes are possible for a perimeter.
Religion: We are preparing for Easter and learning about Lent where we reflect on Jesus' life and all that He sacrifice. We will have our first, whole school celebration for Easter on Thursday, April 14th.
