Wow! I can't believe we're already into November. The students are settling in nicely and are showing signs of progress.
Francais: The students have been working on Remebrance Day activites and are continuing to develop their reading and writing skills. Towards the middle of November, we will begin to read a short Christmas novel together as a class and complete a variety of activities to go with it. This will take us all the way to Christmas.
Our Spelling and Dictée program began a couple of weeks ago. The French words are the same for everyone but there are 3 different groups for the English words; Gold, Green and Pink group. If you or your child do not know which English list they do, please send me a message and I can clarify. The students also have an English and a French booklet that goes with their words. The English booklet corresponds with the color of English group they're in. They are expected to use their time wisely in class and, if they have time in the morning or once they've completed their work, they can work on their spelling sheets. Some parents appreciate being able to work through these sheets with their child therefore, if you would like a second copy to work on at home, please let me know and I'll send one home with your child. You can either take a picture of it or send it back to school before the following Tuesday. The tests are every Tuesday and the students receive their new words and booklets Tuesday too. To keep you informed, I will send a short email to all families whose child has NOT completed their worksheets for the week. After the students have completed their test in class, I ask them to take a picture of it and post it to their portfolio. I will be posting the French Dictée and Spellings words on our Class Story.
English: We will be learning about Remembrance day through books and have been working in a Remembrance day booklet. The students will complete a Remembrance writing activity.
Please ensure your child is reading nightly and that they are writing in their home reading logs using a variety of sentence starters. Some kids like to often use, "I like the part when..." If your child needs another sentence starter sheet, I am happy to send another one home. The students can also begin to elaborate on their sentences or even write 2 or 3. I try to comment on what the students have written and I may also provide feedback through ClassDojo.
Math: We have completed our unit on patterns and everyone should have received an email of your child's test. We are starting our unit on numbers to 1000. Here your child will symbolically and concretely represent numbers to 1000, show the value of these numbers and compare, estimate and order them. They count by 2, 5, 10, 25 and 100 as well as by 3s and 4s, forward and backward.
Social Studies: We are discussing what is important to us and how that makes up our Quality of Life. We will then look at the quality of life in the communities under study. Feel free to talk with your child about the quality of life of your family.
Science: We have finished our unit on Rocks and Minerals. Throughout this unit the students had an opportunity to look at and investigate a variety of Rock samples along with soil samples. In December, we will explore the unit titled “Testing various designs”.
Religion: Our class, along with Serina's will be leading the Advent celebraion this year. I try to have each child partake either by reading or gestures. This celebration will be done virtually where the link will be shared with the other classes in the school. You will also have access to this link near the beginning of December.
Thank you to those who have sent a water bottle with their child. It can be distracting when students need to leave the class to drink from the fountain at the other end of the hallway, let alone, what they are missing while they are gone.
Report cards will be going home November 19. Parent teacher interviews will be shortly after. Keep an eye out for the sign up sheet that will be emailed to you for you to sign up for your interview time.
Please be sure to check the calendar on the website to see the upcoming events.
