Here we are into the month of February and there are lots of things happening. It is nice to see the days getting longer and some beautiful sunny days lighting up our classroom. It is also a time for Random acts of Kindness. I have to thank you for your kindness and your support I have felt throughout the year.
Starting Monday, February 7th, we will have a student teacher in our classroom until April 14th. Her name is Kelsey McQuaig and she is a former French Immersion student from Grande Prairie. She will begin by observing and then slowly taking over the instruction of subjects.
Math: We have almost completed our unit on addition and subtraction of large numbers. The students have learned different strategies for solving these types of equations and are able to explain their reasoning too. We also use the website Xtramath daily to practice the simple facts of addition, subtraction and soon, multiplication. We will continue to revisit the addition and subtraction concepts in our classroom in hopes that children will retain these essential skills. You can practice at home by giving your child a quick 3 digit by 3 digit addition or subtraction question regularly.
Next we will move onto the multiplication and division unit. Here students will demonstrate an understanding of multiplication to 5 × 5 by:
• representing and explaining multiplication using equal grouping and arrays
• creating and solving problems in context that involve multiplication
• modelling multiplication using concrete and visual representations, and recording the process symbolically
• relating multiplication to repeated addition
• relating multiplication to division.
They will also need to understand and recall multiplication facts to 5 × 5.
Demonstrate an understanding of division (limited to division related to multiplication facts up to 5 × 5) by:
• representing and explaining division using equal sharing and equal grouping
• creating and solving problems in context that involve equal sharing and equal grouping
• modelling equal sharing and equal grouping using concrete and visual representations, and recording the process symbolically
• relating division to repeated subtraction
• relating division to multiplication.
Social Studies: Students developed their competencies in using maps and world globes to find geographic places about the 4 countries under study. They learned how to describe the location of places and name geographic characteristics. They will begin to determine the impact of geographic placement on the quality of life in these countries.
Science: We will soon be beginning our unit on hearing and sound. Students explore the nature of sound, its sources, its qualities and what it is. They learn that sound is vibration and that changes in vibration can affect the loudness, pitch and quality of sound. They learn about sound travel by studying what things carry sound, what things make it louder or softer, and what happens to sound when it reaches their ears. The sensitivity of human ears and those of other animals is examined, as students learn about the safe use of this valuable sense.
French: We have been working on cursive writing along with improving reading and writing skills daily. I am seeing progress in many students. Daily reading in French is so crucial to their progress. I am pleased with the connections that the students are making in their home reading logs and in discussions. I feel that daily writing is also very beneficial to steady progress in writing.
English: Our English program will turn to focus on writing specifically in the areas of ideas and organization in writing. Here students learn how to develop their ideas with specific details and organize them effectively. Afterwards, we will work on word choice and finding to specific words to add interest and detail to their writing.
Religion: We have begun our preparations for 1st communion. Again, The 1st Communion mass designated for St. Gerard is set for Wednesday, Februrary 16th at 7 pm.
Our school Carnaval is a little over a week long this year. There will be activities going on beginning on Tuesday, Feb 22 and finishing on Shrove Tuesday, March 1st, right before Lent beginning on Ash Wednesday. There are many activities, inside and out so please make sure your child has their mittens, hats and snowpants.

Here is a list of our students if you are writing out Valentine’s Day cards. I encourage the students to practice their cursive writing and write their cards in handwriting. Snacks are welcomed but must be individually wrapped and store bought.
